WHAT IS IT

Astronomers have, for the first time, discovered an object that is the first known visitor from another star system. This strangely shaped object, reaching breakneck speeds of 196,000 mph, is either a comet or asteroid named ‘Oumuamua‘ which means— “A messenger that reaches out from the distant past” in Hawaiian. It is a cigar-shaped asteroid roughly 1,300 feet (400 meters) long that is about 10 times longer than it is wide. Nothing in our solar system, as far as asteroids and comets go, comes close to its shape. The speed of it in relation to our sun confirms that it is foreign to our system. She entered our solar system, and in a kind of slingshot way, through the gravitational pull of our sun, changed its course, made a turn, and is now continuing out of our solar system. Scientists suspect that it has been on a million year long journey.

Since it is such a unique and strange object, there has been much debate on what it actually is. Usually, a comet has “off-gassing” which makes it go faster with a tail behind it. Oumuamua doesn’t have a noticeable tail, or any detected dust or gassing, which puts it into asteroid territory. Through further research and data collection, it has been determined that it is slightly speeding up, which is something an asteroid doesn’t do. Scientist believe now, although it couldn’t be detected, that it is expelling a little gas after all that is causing it to gently speed up. It has been concluded after further analysis, that it is a comet instead of an asteroid.

There is another far-reaching theory of what it is according to a scientist from Harvard. He believes that it’s a ‘light-sail” broken off from an alien probe. Others believe it could be a broken rock splintered off from an exploding planet millions of light years away. Unfortunately, there isn’t much out there to support these particular theories.

Another strange fact about this comet is instead of it moving like a spiraling football, it spins end over end like a blocked punt. Truly, Oumuamua is a unique and strange interstellar traveler that has caught the scientific community off guard.

Scientists may have been caught off guard, but God wasn’t. Any moment at any time, our God knows exactly where that comet is, where it is going, where it’s been, its origin and final ending. It’s our God who spoke these things into being and by His power all things exist.

OUMUAMUA’S JOURNEY

The incredible vastness and beauty of the second heavens that Oumuamua has traveled through are glorious and beyond comprehension. The astonishing expansion (an interesting side note–there is close to a dozen scriptures that mention how God stretches out the heavens, such as Job 9:8 “He alone stretches out the heavens _ and treads on the waves of the sea.” In 1931, Edwin Hubble made the startling discovery that every galaxy was moving away from our own; in essence, the universe is constantly expanding. Although Oumuamua didn’t get within 15 million miles of earth and it isn’t a large comet; traveling at its current speed, it could hypothetically hit the earth with the energy expenditure of 30.86 megatons of TNT, or about 2057 Hiroshima bombs. Nevertheless, compared to the vastness of our God‘s creation, it is like a grain of sand in all of earth’s oceans combined! Glory to God in the Highest!
