If Only I Had A Little More Faith, I Could…..

Matthew 17:19-20 NLT Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”
20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.
Unfortunately I must admit that I often times hear the Holy Spirit telling me these same words in too many situations I face. Can you imagine having that type of faith?  Maybe some of you do?  Praise be unto God.  But I have to admit that in some areas of my life, I struggle with this issue:  I have faith that God can do all things, but that He will not do it for me or through me.  Am I the only one that has this problem?
Did you know that a mustard seed is only about 1 to 2 mm in diameter, but under the right conditions and soil, can grow to a shrub of about 10-12 feet?!
Jesus used the mustard seed as an analogy of the type of faith that we need to have.  He is telling us that it really doesn’t take much for us to have faith in God to do the Will of God, but faith in Him is a must.  And its not faith in ourselves or our abilities, but faith in the ability of God to use us for His purposes.  And for me, that is the key.  Faith in God for His Will in my life and not putting faith in the life of my will.
Take another look at the scripture above. The disciples ask Jesus, “Why couldn’t WE cast out that demon?”  That is so subtle, that I’ve missed it for years. “WE” can not accomplish anything for God on our own or in our own power and strength.  But if we have faith in God, we can truly do all things through Christ.  Not things to make ourselves comfortable and happy, but to do the Will of God.
Jesus is saying, if we have faith, as small as the smallest seed, with the sole purpose of doing God’s Will, our faith will grow so mightily, that we will be the vessels of the very power of God. For that seed to grow, it must be in the right soil and under the right conditions.  To me this means that our hearts and lives must be pure, humbled and set apart from the world.  We must be committed to the Word of God to fulfill the Will of God in our lives.
Its easy to want God’s power for our own purposes and desires.  Yes, we desire to be mighty men and women of God, but is it really for God’s Kingdom or for our resume building?  I ask myself this often, because I know how easy it is for the enemy to lie and distract.
Matthew 7: 21-23 comes to mind when I think about how easy it can be in doing God’s work, but with the wrong motives or without the power of God’s love as the source of what we do.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
A heavy message, but something I know I needed to be reminded of.  Its not my will I should be living for, but my Heavenly Father’s Will.  When my heart is set on doing His Will, I then can have the faith to accomplish His Will.
May the Spirit of God comfort you today and continue to remove all spots and wrinkles from our lives in preparation for Christ’s return for His bride.
