Are You Complaining Or Praising?

Our Lord and our God, we pray today that you forgive us for our sins of worry, doubt, fear and unbelief. We admit our weakness and ask that you help us to be more trusting, patient and faithful in our relationship with you. Give us this day a spirit of praise and thanksgiving. Not just during this season, but always. We truly want to be willing vessels for you to pour your love, mercy, favor and grace into. Not just to hold for ourselves, but to give to those around us. Father, we thank you for who you are and who we can be in you. It is in your Son, Jesus name we pray. Amen.

When your level of complaining is at an all-time high it could mean that your level of praise is at an all-time low. – Dr. Tony Evans

I must admit that this quote hit me like a 2 x 4, right between the eyes. I know complaining about my circumstances or those who may have wronged me, are nothing but a waste of energy and time. But I often catch myself complaining about something. Whether its to family, myself or God, its still the same…complain, fret or what I have come to call, ” please come join my pity party”.

I know that this action has absolutely no place in the heart of a Child of God, yet I find myself lured to complain rather than praise God for all that He has done. Lord forgive me.

But I do praise God for not allowing me to stay in that comfortable, but spiritually deadly place. I’m thankful that God always provide a way out of despair, fear, pain and sorrow. I only have to open His Word and read it or simply mention the name of Jesus to be reminded of the blessings that I have been given. Rather than use the precious energy and time that God has given me to complain, it is much more beneficial to give praise to God.

David understood this concept. As much mess as he went through, he knew the power of giving God praise over staying in a pit of despair.

Psalm 42: 5 NIV Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 86:12-13 NKJV I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore. 13 For great is Your mercy toward me, And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

Isaiah 61:11 NIV For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.

And finally, the writer in Hebrews, encouraged the people of that day of the importance of praising God. In fact, he instructs them/us to do so continually.

Hebrews 13:15 NIV Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.

This is not easy to do, but it is necessary if we want to be free and to stay free. It is through focusing on Jesus, that we can praise God. Once again it is a choice.

May you find yourself giving more time and energy to praise God than complaining about all the wrongs and ills that may come our way. After all, it is said, “When our praises go up, His blessings come down”.

God bless.
