The following is an e-devotional I posted a few weeks ago. I’ve received mixed reactions to it. One said I was stepping on their toes, but was grateful I did. Another, for whatever reason, asked to be removed. We all are on a journey whether we believe so or not. A journey to everlasting life or to everlasting torment. For me, its really that simple. Why do I believe this? Because I have come to believe, trust and have faith in the Word of God.
Faith is to the soul what life is to the body. Prayer is to faith what breath is to the body. How a person can live and not breathe is past my comprehension, and how a person can believe and not pray is past my comprehension too. — J. C. Ryle
Psalm 116:1-2 NLT 1 I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. 2 Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!
Matthew 21:22 NLT You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”
It is truly a strange thing indeed to hear the number of excuses why a Child of God struggles with praying or simply doesn’t take time to pray at all. We never seem to have problems with taking care of our physical needs such as eating, entertainment, sleeping, etc., but when we start to talk about taking care of our spiritual needs, we don’t have time or don’t know how or a thousand other excuses.
What is more amazing is we don’t spend time talking to God and we wonder why our lives are directionless at times, we walk around full of fear and doubt, and we lack joy and the ability to love one another.
I’ve probably have said this many times before, but I have yet to see a successful winning team or army, just run out on the field or court without receiving the game plan or battle instructions. Maybe you have heard of teams that have trained hard and long enough and were talented enough just to play the game and win without a coach or plan, but are you willing to take that chance with your spiritual life? What about your family? Careers?
Prayer and faith are essential to the growth and well being of all Christians. Starve your spirit of these critical things and its no different than starving your physical body of oxygen and water. You will soon die. When we do this with our spirits, they soon die also.
Now is the time to set aside all other matters and begin to focus on those things that will spiritually make you stronger. If you find yourself lacking in praying and reading God’s word, then set aside the time to do so. TIVO or DVR those silly tv shows that only distract you from a deeper relationship with God. Begin feeding your spirit and ask God to breath life back into your spirit. He is waiting to give you what He’s promised and what you need to live abundantly in Him.
Great post Dracy, our excuses are nothing more than rebellion. We got to get violent with our fallen nature through faith in Christ and His word!
