The Grass May Look Greener…But Is It Real?

“One reason the grass is greener on the other side of the fence is because its artificial turf.” – Unknown

Genesis 21:14-20 NKJV 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs. 16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. 20 So God was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness,

I’ve always felt that the story between Abraham, Sarah and Hagar was very interesting. Both Sarah and Abraham had a need, (They both wanted a son). Now, God went to Abraham and informed him that He would bless him with an heir, a son. However, as most stories go when God makes a promise to us that is so amazing and far from our comprehension, Sarah and Abraham took matters in there own hands, and developed a plan to help God out. Thus enters Hagar and soon to follow Ishmael and ultimately Isaac.

Also as most stories goes when we step out of God’s Will and do our own things, we usually regret our actions and plans, and try to correct them, only to make things worst. Sarah gets angry and kicks Hagar and Ishmael out. So now we find Hagar and Ishmael, in the wilderness, with no water and no hope. This is when and where God reveals that He is always in control of all situations and informs Hagar that not only has He heard her cries, but Ishmaels as well. I specifically like the part of the scripture in this version that says, “Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.”
